E-Kids Global
Talent Show
VCFGP held it’s first ever eKids Global
Talent and Art show on April 28th,
2007 from 2-4pm. It was a huge success. We
were amazed at the artwork the children
submitted – from a photo collage of Jace’s
family to paintings by Sarah and even a
model car built with the help of his dad by
Jacob. They were incredibly proud to show
off their creations.
Parents, friends, siblings and grandparents
were all able to enjoy browsing through the
art exhibit – I think one parent even made
an offer to buy a painting but the child
declined. Those in attendance were also
able to sit back and enjoy watching a group
dance, guitar solos, a keyboardist and even
a few magic tricks by one EKG’er. Ben did a
fabulous job co-emceeing the event – we
think he has a future in either stand-up or
maybe help Mario do the announcements on
Sunday mornings.
The most exciting part for the kids, outside
of the wonderful snacks, was the appearance
of an amazing graffiti artist, Brian Serfes
from Lewiston. He started out the event
creating an amazingly HUGE canvas filled
with a colorful ‘EKG’ on it. The clouds
seemed to break right around the time he
transformed his canvas giving him some
amazing light to create. Afterwards he set
up shop right inside the auditorium where he
feverishly worked to write each child’s name
in graffiti. During the intermission and
even afterwards he had crowds of kids
watching intently as he made their names
look quite remarkable.
One thing is for sure – we will have this
again next year and we cannot wait to see
what talents and skills they bring!”

The Vineyard
Harvest Party
Oct 31 2006: The
Harvest Party was well attended by young and old
alike! Even ol' George Washington and Abe
Lincoln dropped by. The kids enjoyed a variety
of different games involving all kinds of silly
things....from toilet paper to hay bales! Lots
of goodies were shared by all, and the moon
bounce was a boucing success. Costumes were
quite creative, and adults dropped by the cafe
for delicious desserts and coffee. There was
something different for everyone, but the one
thing everybody had in common was the smile on
their face at the end of the party! |

Speckled Mountain Hike
Speckled Mountain Hike,
October 21, 2006
It was an ominous start to
the Vineyard hike up Speckled Mountain, a
3000-plus foot peak in Evans
Notch, located on the Maine side of the
White Mountains National Forest. The sky
turned dark as we approached the mountain,
and yup - those were a few October
snowflakes drifting aimlessly by us in the
parking lot as we began to think we didn't
dress warmly enough. A brave group of five
Vinyardites plus our canine guide Barclay
donned every stitch of fall clothing we
brought to make a go at the possible wintry
weather (well, not the dog - but she did
wear an orange bandana to warn off any
hunters - being the opening day of deer
hunting for children, of all things).
Ours were the only cars in
the lot. That didn't stop Wayne, Dan,
Hannah, Jen, Barclay and I from setting out
at about 10am up the steep slope. The slope
got easier in places, but the mountain
streams didn't - they were spring-like with
all the recent rain runoff. It wasn't long
before we encountered a dusting of snow left
behind the night before. In spots the forest
floor was Christmasy white - to everyone's
surprise! The first snow of the season!
After a steady climb
through evergreen and bare hardwood forests,
we reached the wind-swept peak around
12:30. We took a couple of pictures, though
we ducked down into the trees and out of the
wind to eat our lunch. Wayne managed a few
ZZZ's, having been up late traveling the
night before. Barclay the opportunist
checked out his lunch, but left it alone as
the other hikers were quite generous with
their snacks.
About half way down the
trail the sun came out illuminating the
landscape, but it never warmed up enough to
melt the dusting of snow. My jacket
thermometer ranged between 32 and 35 degrees
all day. Despite some cold fingers, the
steady pace helped keep us warm, and
everyone kept warm in spirit. We reached the
cars about 2:30, and everyone (but the
drivers) snoozed on the ride home. A good
day, great exercise, and fantastic company.
Nothing refreshes the lungs like a crisp,
clean breathe of God's October air!

A
Vineyard Hike
The
evening of July 6 had arrived. Dark clouds
were encountered on the drive to Douglas
Mountain, so the Vineyard trekkers were
rightfully concerned with the weather. By
the time we reached Douglas Mountain,
however, the sun had won out, setting the
stage for a splendid hike up a Southern
Maine mountain on a beautiful midsummer's
night eve!
With much
anticipation, everyone in the merry group of
eight set out up the steep slope. After some
conversation and a bit of huffing as we
climbed, the surrounding mountains to the
north and west finally arose up to greet us
as we broke through the forest canopy into
the summit's granite clearing. The view was
stunning, with the panorama of Sebago Lake
in its entirety resting below like a mirror
in a field of emerald. But we weren't
quite there yet, as an interesting old stone
tower built in 1925 awaited to take us even
higher. After a lengthy round of oooh's and
ahhh's, we headed down from the tower, down
from Douglas Mountain, refreshed and
thankful to be alive and able to enjoy the
wonder of God's creation right here in good
ol' Maine.

Vineyard Softball
Sunday May 21
began with strong sunshine and promising skies
for the Vineyard softball game at Windham High
School. Players started gathering for some ball
tossing and batting practice at 1pm, and by 2pm
all twenty-two softballers were raring to go.
The teams were evenly divided with Jim Cyr
captain of one and Patrick Cyr captain of the
other (its a Cyr thing, if there had been three
teams, Barb Cyr would have been the third
captain). The game alternated between short
innings highlighted by defensive prowess and
long innings filled with runners rounding the
bases at a dizzying pace. There were lots of
hits, including several home runs.
By 2:30pm, the skies had quickly become dark and
shortly thereafter opened up in rain. By 3:00pm
everyone was soaking wet, but spirits were high
and the game continued by unanimous vote.
Javon Gibbs showed his skilled defensive play at
third base in addition to poking two hard base
hits. Jonathan and Matthew Clement brothers
showed brilliance with both the glove and their
base running skills. Bill King turned in a
strong pitching effort including snaring a
screaming come-backer line drive to the mound
late in the game. The play of the game, however,
belonged to an youngster who came out of nowhere
to glove a smoking line drive on the fly in left
field, which had appeared destined for the next
town. If anyone knows the name of that kid,
please let us know! Kevin Dionisio made some
acrobatic catches in the outfield to keep the
faithful spectators entertained. Jeff Files
umpired a flawless game from behind the plate
(kudos Jeff), and the game came down to the last
inning before the team captained by Cyr won by a
slim margin.

Tubing...Vineyard Style!
February
26, 2006: It was a fantastic day of tubing
at the Sea Coast Fun Park in Windham. Despite
the frigid temps, we had approx 100 members of
the church come out to enjoy an afternoon of
fellowship and fun. The park has 6 different
runs and, thankfully, an automatic lift to pull
you to the top of the hill. Of course the kids
had a blast linking their tubes together and the
speeds got the adrenalin flowing. Click on the
pics below to see some of the fun!
